IBM EFFORTS IN THE EVOLUTION OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

On that day, August 16, 1988, IBM introduced artificial intelligence software. Artificial intelligence (AI) has evolved over the years from a distant dream to a transformative force in various aspects of our lives, and IBM is at the forefront of this extraordinary evolution. With a history spanning more than a hundred years, this tech giant has played a key role in the development of artificial intelligence. From early AI research to today's applications, IBM's contributions have left an indelible mark on the field and shaped our perception of AI. IBM's involvement in AI dates back to the 1950s when the concept of AI was still in its infancy. At this time, IBM began developing the IBM 701 computer, which is often considered to be one of the first computers available on the market. This machine laid the foundation for AI research and provided the computing power needed for the first experiments in machine learning and symbolic reasoning. That was a huge leap in calculations.

Over time, IBM has continued to invest in artificial intelligence research and development. A milestone was the introduction of the mainframe IBM System/360 in the 1960s.This computing group paves the way for more sophisticated AI applications, allowing researchers to experiment with larger datasets and more complex algorithms. Additionally, IBM's work on natural language processing and early expert systems demonstrated the company's commitment to getting machines to understand and process human language, a crucial aspect of AI.

The 1980s marked a significant era in IBM's AI endeavors. During this period, IBM unveiled the Advanced Workstation for Editing and Reporting (AWER) in 1985. This system showcased sophisticated language processing abilities .However, as mentioned in the first paragraph, IBM didn't introduce AI software until 1988, cementing its commitment to pushing the boundaries of AI. This move laid the groundwork for further innovations that will shape the company's AI legacy. One of the most significant achievements in the history of IBM artificial intelligence took place in 1997 when the famous chess match took place between IBM supercomputer Deep Blue and world chess champion Garry Kasparov. Deep Blue's victory was not only a symbolic triumph for artificial intelligence, but also a testament to IBM's ability to build powerful computing systems capable of making complex decisions. IBM's AI journey didn't end in failure.

The company continues to research and innovate, pushing the boundaries of research and development in the field of artificial intelligence. One of the major breakthroughs was the development of IBM Watson. Launched in 2011, Watson demonstrated the potential of artificial intelligence in the areas of natural language processing, knowledge searching and reasoning. Watson's historic victory in "Jeopardy! against human masters highlighted his ability to process large amounts of information and provide precise natural language responses. In addition to research and development, IBM has played a key role in the democratization of AI through cloud-based services and platforms. By making AI tools and resources available around the world, IBM has enabled companies, scientists and developers to harness the power of AI in applications from healthcare to finance. IBM's history in AI spans decades of innovation, research and development. From its early experiments with mainframe computing to the development of groundbreaking systems like Deep Blue and Watson, IBM has shaped the history and development of AI and computing overall.

The progress we see today in artificial intelligence from theory to reality is undoubtedly the result of the hard work of IBM and pioneers like Alan Turing, who envisioned machines doing human tasks. As the world moves into the next revolution, including artificial intelligence, I hope Nigeria and Africa move forward together.
